The fastest compiler taking forever#

Over at the Delphi-PRAXiS we had an interesting thread going on the last two days where one user asked for what reason it could have, that his Delphi compiler is so slow. It took about 45 minutes to compile just over 20.000 lines.

The source of the problem was a piece of software, which in my mind never earned to be called software. The network version of the Norton anti-virus software. The user asked his admin to exclude PAS, DFM, and DCU files to be excluded from the check list of files being checked with every access.

The compile time went down to 8 seconds. That is just 0,3% of the original compile time. Sadly though, that will not be working anymore...

Sorry but I can't help myself...

I've installed Norton Antivirus (network and non-network version) on literally hundreds of machines, in dozens of settings, for more than 10 years with virtually no problems. This includes all my development machines, even those running inside of VMs.

I don't really go out of my way to promote NAV and it may not be the world's best. I'm open to the fact that NAV has flaws like every other AV I've ever used. However, I am speaking out here because clearly this is not "strictly" an issue with NAV. Any self-respecting computer propfessional would know that excluding PAS, DFM, and DCU, is hardly exclusive proof.

I certainly understand that the user may not have wanted to spend anymore time on the issue, especially once he/she found a viable "work-a-round" that corrected the symptom. However, it's truly sad how people jump to conclucions and then take the time to blog incomplete info, especially when their comments can be damaging in nature.

Honestly, but imo all the Norton stuff, except Norton Commander - RIP, is just plain crap. If you want an excuse in the style of the cartoon you linked, then install Symantec/Norton "Internet Security"

Well, I have had issues with Norton Antivirus more than I care to think about and this one came up at the Delphi-PRAXiS and the solution was provided by others who had the same problem themselves.
All I have done here is making this available to others as well. I did not write, that this instance was an exclusive proof, but it was once again the solution to the problem. Now, the administrator of the may have to look somewhere else why compiling those projects takes up so much time, but in the mean-time it works.
So yes, this may be damaging Norton, but then again their software gave me so much hazzles that I myself am happy not to have to work with that anymore. I had similar problems at BMW with Norton in their environment, so I started to setup my own development environment there. I had Norton utilities on my computer for a long time (a long time ago) and they were good at some point, but they got really bad later. Last time I tried them for my machines was about three years ago and guess what: they lost the trial ;-)

Oh, don't get me started. I gave up on that bloated NAV ages ago. I switched to AVG and I've been troublefree and my machine is usable.

When it comes to good ol' Norton Commander, Rarlab's FAR is actually a better Windows version of NC than Symantec ever made.
