Code Crunching

Most of you readers know, that photography is one of my hobbies. Being born in '77 and having real contact with cameras in the mid '90 for the first time, I am a kid of the zooms. I did not even really think about fixed focal lengths. In the last months I have read over and over, that using fixed focal lengths is the best that one can do to improve when taking photography a little more serious.

So searching I learned about the "nifty fifty" from Canon. Why am I writing that? Simply, if you own a Canon and want to learn more about it, think about getting this lens. It usually comes for less than 100 EUR/USD and is a very good glass for that money. Lot's of light and fairly good optics for less than any other SLR lens on the market.

Now, I have taken this step and started on a group on Flickr.com called "Project 50." They encourage you to take 50 photos using a 50mm prime lens. It is fun and it should teach you quiet a lot about photo composition. Below is the fourth photo I've published using the lens and I love it. What do you think?

I am interested how I'll improve over the coming weeks toying around with that lens. I am already very interested in doing more prime lens photography. But new lenses will have to wait, since they usually are a lot more expensive than 99 Euro in a media market chain store ;-)

In 4 Stunden erhalten die Teilnehmer Einblick in die Zusammenhänge von Blende, Verschlusszeit und ISO-Empfindlichkeit und den daraus resultierenden Ergebnissen. Well, I it has been quiet around this topic for some time. Finally, I have found the time to get back to it and while I have been busy in the last weeks, I took my camera with me almost anywhere I went. So, here are the two prime shots of those last two months.

Well, I am back from the SDN Event in Driebergen. It was a fun event, I have met quiet a few people and, after a few years, finally met Dr. Bob again. One of my session was about the Windows 7 Taskbar (an update for the components is in the pipe line, btw). And when talking about Windows 7, one of the question coming up was the user account control (UAC) and how - IF - they have changed it.

While talking about that, I started out to remind them WHY it was implemented in Windows Vista and WHY I have not turned it off, ever. The reason is simple: it was implemented to block viruses from invading your computer and yes, it works. My story for them was as simple as it was obviously surprising for most of them sitting in the room.

About two years ago, I started a small experiment. I set up a computer with a new and clean Windows Vista install. Leaving the UAC on and running updates as Windows reminded me to do just that. The way a user should be working with the PC. However, I have not installed any third party Anti-Virus software, nor any third-party firewall, just the on-board tools Windows Defender and the UAC. I used this PC regularly for internet surfing, writing mails, doing some fun, testing software and so on. I let my girl friend use it for internet surfing - she knows how to use a computer, but by far, she is no geek, or even close to that. She does Excel, Word, mails online, games online, iTunes, etc. Even some peer-to-peer sharing. She had an administrative account and I explained to her what UAC meant and why it was implemented.

Well, end of last year I put on Norton AntiVirus, McAffee and a few other anti-virus tools and ran the big test: All tools reported the same final results: 0 viruses found!

Now my challenge to you: try that with Windows XP in todays Internet world ;-)

Conclusion: yes, the UAC is bothersome at times, and when it pops up to often, it will get the user aggravated, but it has its purpose. With Windows XP's on-board tools you simply where at a large risk when you went online. I am a believer of the UAC and, while it bothers me at times, I support it.

With Windows 7 it shows up less often. So some settings will be changed easier than under Windows Vista without the user confirming that. But as far as I have seen, none of the changes (except setting the computer time of course) will survive the next reboot of your computer. And if you don't mind, under Windows 7 you can move up the UAC messages to the Windows Vista level again. And yes, if you still mind, you can turn it off as well, but I know, I won't.

I am happy with this price since I could freely choose a book from the DPI selection of Addison Wesley Germany. I choose the "The Perfect Moment" (Der entscheidende Moment), a book by Scott McNally giving his tips for taking stunning photos. The book came yesterday during a seminar I gave. Now I have time to read it :-)

Vor drei Wochen habe ich mich auch hier von meinem alten Fahrrad verabschiedet und angekündigt, dass ich mich nach einem neuen Rad umschaue. Und das ist auch geschehen und ich habe mehrere verschiedene Modelle verschiedener Hersteller getestet. Eigentlich stand meine Entscheidung schon fast fest (Hersteller Cube), aber dann setzte ich mich auf ein Trek Madone. Und das war ein Erlebnis. Bei einem anderen Verkäufer hatte ich die Möglichkeit das Fahrrad etwas ausführlicher zu testen und habe mit dem Rad eine ungefähr 45 minütige Testfahrt gemacht - es war ein riesen Spaß. Das Rad ist Fahrfreude pur. Als ich wieder am Geschäft des Radhändlers ankam stand mein Entschluss fest und dieses Rad ist es geworden. Nun habe ich das Rad etwas mehr als zwei Wochen und heute morgen die 500 Kilometergrenze überschritten. Ich liebe es noch mehr ;-) Natürlich bin ich jetzt auch auf diese Klick-Pedalen umgestiegen und habe mich erst einmal gepackt, da ich aus diesen nicht raus gekommen bin. Aber insgesamt hätte ich nicht erwartet wieviel Vorteil diese Konstruktion bringt - einfach Klasse.

Momentan habe ich eine kompakte Kassette vorne, welche ich nächstes Jahr wohl auf eine größere umstellen werde, damit ich noch mehr heraus holen kann aus dem Gefährt. Aber jetzt ist es mir auch klar, warum mir diese Rennradfahrer immer wieder was vorgemacht haben, währrend ich versuchte auf meinem alten MTB hinten dran zu bleiben. Mache ich ja jetzt nicht anders und Geschwindigkeiten von 40 km/h sind auch kein Problem - nun gut fast keines, die meisten Radwege sind dafür nicht wirklich ausgelegt und die Ampeln tun ihr übriges zum getrübten Fahrspaß in der Stadt, aber in den umliegenden Gebieten ist es Spaß pur ;-)

Die Bereifung habe ich von Bontrager Race auf Continental Grand Prix 4000S umgestellt. So gibt es weniger Platte und mehr Speed. Diese Mäntel kann ich nur empfehlen, um Eure Dackelspalter (Reifen mit 8,2 bar Luftdruck) vor Luftdruckabfall zu schützen!

This year I had the chance to participate in this first world wide photo walk event. While founded as a mean to advertise the sale of Scott Phelby's new book on LightRoom 2, the event was free for anyone to join it. We had lots of fun here in Munich. Below you see the photos that made my selection.

Nach nun fast 13 Jahren muss ich mich von meinem geliebten Mountainbike, einem '95er Trek Y-22 trennen. Als eines der ersten Bikes überhaupt, welche in OCLV-Carbon-Bauweise von Trek ausgeliefert wurden, und als erstes der Y-Frame Serie ist es jetzt zu einem jähen Ende gekommen. Die Aufhängung für die hintere Federung (Alu) wurde damals mittels Industrie-Spezielkleber an den Rahmen (Carbon) fixiert. Und dieser hat jetzt seinen Geist aufgegeben und somit die Nutzung des Fahrrads unmöglich gemacht.

Leider habe ich die Rechnung für dieses wunderbare Fahrrad nicht (mehr) und kann somit die Garantieleistung für den Rahmen nicht in Anspruch nehmen. Trek gibt in Deutschland lediglich 10 Jahre Garantie auf Rahmen, in den USA aber 25 Jahre. Da ich das Fahrrad in den USA erworben hatte, hätte ich somit auch den Anspruch auf diese Leistung. Allerdings könnte mir auch dann Trek keinen neuen Rahmen dieser Serie geben, so dass ich dann den ganzen Rest des Bikes umrüsten müsste (V-Brakes -> Scheibenbremsen und alles daraus folgendes an Teilen...)

Nun ja, jetzt muss ich mich entscheiden was mir als nächstes unter den Hintern kommt. Es wird kein Mountainbike mehr sein, da ich dafür in den letzten Jahren leider keine Zeit mehr gefunden habe. Nachdem ich das Rad aber weiterhin als Sportgerät nutzen möchte wird es ein Rennrad werden. Welches es wird... schaun wir demnächst mal.

Die aktuelle Auswahl schwankt von CUBE zu Trek zu Specialized zu Biancha zu ... schaun mer ma', wie man hier so schön sagt ;-)

This was a hard pick, but here we go. A few others are quiet interesting imo as well, but mostly for more personal reasons. So here I used simple physics to create a super macro lens - read at Flickr how ;-)

I have noticed that I missed posting the images for June and July. So here we go with the photo of June. Taken in the Munich Zoo Hellabrunn on a nice Sunday. We made about 300 photos, but this is my favourite.

Yesterday, we had a partial solar eclipse in Munich. Sadly, at the maximum, the sun was blocked about 6% down here, but that is certainly better than nothing. So, I took the chance to learn a little bit more about photography and I'd like to show you my results.

So this is the result, on of three pictures I've uploaded so far. Take a look and comment on them if you like ;-)

This weekend I went the the 8th Munich Open and took pictures, loads of them!!! In total I had over 3800 JPEG, taking over 16 GB of disk space. While I could run around on Saturday (fights) and zoom in and out, I had to assume the role of a judge on Sunday (kata & forms). Therefore, from Sunday, most pictures where taken from a tripod and an assistant simply pushed the release button every once in a while.

Around 600 of the images are online now, at Flickr. Here a nice slide show ;-)

Lange hat es gedauert, aber wie ein altes Sprichwort so schön sagt: "Gut Ding will Weile haben.". Nach langen Verhandlungen ist es uns endlich gelungen eine eigene Bleibe für unsere Karategruppe zu finden. Als Karate Dôjô Suganuma gehen wir als Abteilung des TSV Maccabi München e.V., dem jüdischen Verein Münchens. Ziel von Maccabi ist es Kinder, Jugendliche und Erwachsene verschiedener Herkünfte einander näher zu bringen und Brücken zwischen den jüdischen Mitgliedern der Gemeinde und nicht-jüdischen Mitgliedern zu schaffen.

Die Karateabteilung fängt mit wenigen Mitgliedern an und wird hoffentlich schnell wachsen, so dass wir uns selbst finanziell gut tragen können.

This week one of our customers needed me in Barcelone for a meeting. Having some spare time, I took my trusted camera around Barcelona and made quiet a few photos (about 5 GB in data). This is one of my favourite images of the day, the colours just turned out great. I used my Blue-Gold-Polarizer to accomplish it. I think I have to get the Singh-Ray version of the polarizer, it will look even better as far as I know ;-)

Well, just to talk about it. On Saturday I played for the first time with the HDR feature of Corel Paint Shop Pro X2. It is fairly easy to use and produces good results, even with hand held shots, that need to be aligned. Sadly it produces some ghosting, as you can see with the car, that is (not) there. We'll see what else will come...

Actually, I have taken this picture in February as well, but this is not so important. Anyway, this picture was taken without a tripod, 1/30 sec, Av 4,0, and 35mm. It was a cool evening, when I went home from work. Since I held the camera in my hand, it is a little blury due to shaking of my hand.

Well, so I start picking up the habit of posting a photo I made every once in a while. Sorry ;-)

This one was taken last Sunday and has an exposure time of about 80 seconds using my trusted EOS 400 and a new lens I bought second hand. I was just playing around with it and just love this picture. It made my desktop about 5 mintues later.

Taken from my balocony pointing at the street in a mild night, just about 0°C - mild for the season, anyway.

John Kaster informed us today of the passing of Robert Marquardt. Robert was a well respected member of the Delphi-PRAXiS and we will remember him in the fondest ways. He has done much for the Delphi Jedi Project and I hope the project will find a new person, who will step into his steps and help it prosper the way it should.

I have met Robert at various Delphi happenings and it has been a pleasure talking to him, always. I hope you have a great time ahead of you. My sincere sympathies for his family and closests friends, I have just written short messages with him and had small talks only, but they were a pleasure, always.

Thank you again Robert, for all you have done for me, the Delphi-Community of Germany and the Delphi developers world wide. It hasn't been easy always, especially in the last years, but you have been there for us, THANKS!   

I know, it is a little late, but last week was stuffed with work and I did not have time to blog anything. So, all I wanted to say "Well done, CodeGear," thanks for making CodeRage II free.

Now folks, it is time for a real life conference from CodeGear - yes, we are willing to pay for that and yes, it costs much more than USD 150 for a online conference, but it is all about the face-to-face meetings...

Anyway, you all have fun attending CodeRage. Next week I'll use to prepare my Delphi CodeCamp session on Windows Vista, write a few articles and do more web development. Then I'll continue working on my localization solution, which I am going to present at the EKON Spring 2008 edition, so stay tuned, much stuff coming up soon...   

Well, I bought a small Sony Handycam (HDR-SR5E), with a 40 GB hard drive and Full HD resolution. It is a nice video camera, though I am wondering a few things... First, isn't Full HD supposed to be 1920x1080 pixels, so why do all software applications coming with it give me a maximum resolution of 1440x1080 pixels? Would someone enlighten me, please? Next, speaking of the software - why does Sony advertise it is Vista compatible, yet nowhere they tell you, that they only support the 32 bit version of Vista (and Windows XP). You cannot even install it on Vista 64 bit. Well, you can install it, if you wish to trash your Vista installation, since you better have a backup to boot Vista 64 bit again. Honestly, the software can be installed on a Vista x64 machine, it just will not boot again, and yes, I had a clean Vista installation, only 7zip and Adobe Acrobat Reader installed so far...

So, the software they give you lacks most important features, does not run as advertised nad has a lousy MPEG-conversion. So who can name a few good low- to medium-priced software packages to edit AVCHD videos and create full featured DVDs, later Blu-Ray/HD DVD, which currently is not quiet as important, though.

Gestern gab es endlich mal wieder unsere Mitgliederversammlung, welche alle zwei Jahre stattfindet. Auf der letzten war ich nicht dabei, da ich damals noch nicht Mitglied im Verein war und somit war diese meine erste im Verein. In gemütlicher Runde haben wir verschiedene Themen angesprochen und einen neuen Vorstand gewählt.

Der alte Vorstand wurde mit Applaus entlassen und zwei unserer langjährigen Mitglieder sind (NACH Umzug, Hochzeit und Kind) ausgetreten, da es zeitlich nicht mehr möglich ist regelmäßig zu uns zu kommen. Auf diesem Wege möchte auch ich Jürgen und Silke und deren Nachwuchs viel Erfolg für das weitere Leben wünschen. Ich hoffe, dass wir uns noch ein paar Male sehen werden, Möglichkeiten sollte es ja genug geben.

Auch will ich dem Verein für das mir ausgesprochene Vertrauen danken. Ich werde schauen, dass ich meine Vorstandsarbeiten sorgfältig ausführe. Als ersten Schritt haben wir erst einmal die Umzug der Domaine des Vereins Karate Dojo München 1 e.V. auf meinen Server veranlasst. In den nächsten Wochen werden wir dann Schritt für Schritt die Webseite überarbeiten und zukünftig hoffentlich auch regelmäßig aktualisieren.

Well, Hadi has written about it already, he was as fast as they come. And not much more can be said, than Hadi has written already. However, I just want to throw my voice in there as well. I was quiet surprised when I read about the registration fee of 150 USD for participating in the conference, if you are not using one the current products. Well, I missed CodeRage last year, because I had other things on my hands to do, but same as Hadi, I wont attend this year either.

Why? Well, for starters, I prefer real life conferences as well. I always dreamed about attending some BorCon (was not in my budget back then) or a real life CodeRage now. As far as I heard, they probably will never happen again and I have to console myself with the EuroDevCon, which is fine. However, a virtual conference just does not have this same flair and for me it is all about meeting the people in person, get to know them, talk a little about whatever one likes, go out for a nice dinner, have fun with all those guys in the lobby and maybe attending a few sessions. But sitting in front of my laptop or computer just does not cut it.

So Hadi, what are you doing end of November? Like to meet? *g*

Letzte Woche kam Shihan Keigo Abe aus Japan für ein paar Tage nach Deutschland. Erstmalig kam er auch auf Einladung unseres Dôjôs nach München, um ein dreistündiges Seminar zu leiten. Insgesamt gab es eine sehr positive Resonanz auf das Training. Speziell in der zweiten Einheit ging er tiefer in die Materie einiger Kata und deren Geschichte ein, was sehr guten Anklang bei allen Teilnehmern fand. Neben einigen Übungen für schnellere Beinarbeit gab er uns auch Einblicke in seine Ausführungen bekannter Kata und erläuterte kurz, warum er einige Techniken anders ausführt, als diese bei uns in Deutschland bekannt sind.

Am drauf folgenden Donnerstag reisten wir mit Shihan Abe nach Frankfurt/Oder in das befreundete Dôjô Jitoku. Dort setzte er sein Training fort und vertiefte ähnliche Aspekte durch weitere Methoden des Trainings. Im Anschluss waren wir gemeinsam Essen bei einem sehr guten Italiener am Rathausplatz.

Am Samstag gab es den großen Jahreslehrgang mit Shihan Abe in Bad Oldesloe im Dôjô Wakayama. Auch hier setzte er sein Training fort und nutzte weitere Möglichkeiten uns neuen Ansporn auf den Weg zu geben uns stets und ständig zu verbessern. Im Anschluss gab es die DAN-Prüfungen nach den Vorgaben der JSKA. Prüfer waren, neben Shihan Keigo Abe, Shihan Dieter Flindt (SKVD) und Shihan Robert Sidoli (Yahara Karate / Karate no michi).

Gestern waren wir auf einem Lehrgang mit Sensei Sugimura in München. Seine Worte am Ende waren "Ich weiß, dass mein Training langweilig ist." Aber ich muss ihn da doch korrigieren.

Sensei Sugimura arbeitete gestern vorwiegend am Konzept des korrekten Hüfteinsatzes, und wie man dieses bei Kizami- und Gyaku-Tsuki umsetzt. Dazu zog er in den 5 Stunden die Heian Shodan und Nidan Kata, als auch die Bassai Dai heran, um dieses auch hier zu üben. Auch wenn einige seiner Ausschweife etwas langatmig waren, so war der gesamte Tag eine Bereicherung und es hat Spaß gemacht dabei sein zu können. Langweile kam gewiss nicht auf, nur hin und wieder ein paar kalte Füße.

Inzwischen bin ich ja schon fast ein Stammkunde in der Avis-Station, welche nur 500 Meter von meiner Haustür entfernt ist. Seit über 2 Jahren habe ich jeden Mietwagen dort geholt und zurück gegeben und bin insgesamt sehr zufrieden mit der Truppe vor Ort. Bestellen tue ich aber immer online über Avis.de, weil das entscheidend (sprich ca. 20 Prozent) billiger ist, als in der Station - warum auch immer.

Für nächste Woche wollte ich mir also mal wieder einen Wagen holen und bin auf deren Webseite, welche dieses Jahr ein angenehmes Facelifting erhalten hat. Aber irgendwie scheint die Seite doch noch nicht ganz mit der Technologie Schritt halten zu wollen, so ist die Auswahl der Mietstation inzwischen ein Akt in drei Teilen, bevor ich mir um den Rest Gedanken machen kann.

Das geschafft habe ich mich durch deren Anmietformulare geklickt - die Auswahl der Wagen ist besser als früher - und habe am Ende die Bestellung aufgegeben. Leider fehlt inzwischen die Möglichkeit weitere Kommentare zur Anmietstation via Freitextfeld zu senden, so dass man im Anschluss anrufen muss, wenn man Sonderwünsche hat, welche meistens auch erfüllt werden, sofern möglich.

Aber viel wichtiger, wenn man online bestellt und im Voraus bezahlt (anstatt gut 450 Euro, "nur" 330 Euro), dann erhält man von Avis einen Voucher via Email zugesandt. So auch dieses Mal, nun ja, fast. Es war eine leere Email, in welcher lediglich die Standardsignatur enthalten war. Also noch ein Anruf bei Avis, dieses Mal nicht die Anmietstation, sondern beim Internet Helpdesk irgendwo anders - Telefonnummer nach nur 2 Klicks von der Startseite aus gefunden - und denen gesagt, dass die Email nicht sehr hilfreich ist für die Anmietung. Nun ja, man sendet mir den Voucher dann nochmals via Fax zu. Okay, Nummer raus gegeben und gewartet. Ungefähr 45 Minuten später klingelte das Fax und es kamen Daten an, nur hat das Avis-Fax gemeint "nö!" und die Übertragung abgebrochen. Ich war gerade dabei nochmals bei denen anzurufen, als 30 weitere Minuten später dann doch noch das erwartete Fax kam.

Morgen kommt Sensei Sugimura nach München und gibt einen eintägigen Lehrgang. Ausrichter ist das Karate Dôjô Solln aus München. Teilnahmegebühr sind 16 Euro und wir werden natürlich auch da sein.

Zurzeit stecke ich mitten in den Vorbereitungen für meine anstehende DAN-Prüfung (Ni-Dan). Vor gut einem Jahr erhielt ich von unserem Bundestrainer die Erlaubnis dieses Jahr zur Prüfung anzutreten. Die Prüfung ist für den 20. Oktober geplant, fast genau drei Jahre nach meiner letzten Prüfung.

Nach den Sommerferien, in welchen es fast keine Möglichkeiten zum Training gab, machte ich mich also wieder daran zu trainieren. Nach nur eineinhalb Wochen gab es bereits die erste Unterbrechung, da ich zur EKON musste. Jetzt bin ich endlich zurück und habe zu allem Überfluss ein sehr stark angeschwollenes rechtes Knie. Was ich mir da angetan habe, das weiß ich noch nicht und wovon die Schwellung kommt gleich noch viel weniger. Nun warte ich das mal bis morgen ab und werde sehen müssen, wie es sich dann mit dem Knie verhält...

Ich habe die Ehre, Sensei Keigo Abe, Chief Instructor der JSKA, nach München einzuladen. Sensei Abe war 10 Jahre technischer Direktor der JKA, der größten japanische Karateorganisation.

Der Lehrgang wird in zwei Einheiten aufgeteilt und wird am 17. Oktober von 18:00 bis 21:00 Uhr im Pestalozzi-Gymnasium stattfinden. Weitere Informationen findet Ihr auf der speziell eingerichteten Lehrgangsseite.
